On the shores of Lake Nasser, 15 kilometers from Aswan, is the Kalabsha temple, built in honor of the Nubian god of the Sun, Mandulis. The temple was originally built in 30 BC, but it is almost completely unfinished, although it is one of the finest examples of Egyptian architecture in Nubia. The temple is 76 meters long and 22 meters wide and consists of a main façade in the form of a pylon, a courtyard and three sanctuaries, which is characteristic of the Ptolemaic era. There are several historical inscriptions on the walls of the temple, among which one carved by the governor of Egypt, forbidding pigs to appear in the temple.
By the way, you will be able to climb to the roof, which offers a magnificent view of the reservoir and the dam. When Christianity was introduced in Egypt, the temple was used as a church. In connection with the construction of the dam in Aswan, since this unique masterpiece of Egyptian architecture could have been flooded by the waters of Lake Nasser. It took about two years to dismantle, move and reassemble the temple. It is now in the immediate vicinity of the dam.
After visiting the temple, the Nubian Museum awaits you. It offers its visitors around 3,000 Nubian artifacts ranging from primitive times to the Islamic era. In terms of area, the museum occupies about 50,000 m2. The building is surrounded by a magnificent green park. Our guide will tell you about the amazing Nubian culture.
In the afternoon, our driver will take you back to your hotel in Aswan.
